Leadership training trends for 2016

These titles may come across as sounding like examples of “buzz-word bingo” and management-speak but given the technological age we live in, these are exactly the types of training that make sense. There is no longer the need to spend lots of money and waste hours travelling to undertake training courses. Effective training can be undertaken wherever and whenever with an internet connection, and these training plans will play a big role in forging new business leaders.
Blended learning is on the rise
Blended learning combines e-learning or virtual classroom learning situations with in-person or one-to-one sessions. This style of learning provides the best of both worlds for people, allowing them to pick up the basics whenever they want but then showcase their new found knowledge in personal sessions. In 2014, 29% of personal training hours were taught in the form of blended learning modules, which was a 0.8% increase on 2013’s total. However, with the rise of mobile devices and better internet connections, this figure is expected to rise in the years to come.
A growing number of businesses are using games and simulations to engage their employees and challenge their problem-solving capabilities. A great example of the benefits of this learning process comes from Deloitte, who were struggling to put senior executives through a leadership development program. By revamping the delivery of the lesson plan, and making it more of a gaming challenge, they reduced completion time by 50% and increased the number of daily users on their site by over 46%.
M-Learning is focused on mobile learning and with people using smartphones and tablets to access the internet, there is a need to create training plans that are compatible with these devices and the way people use these devices. Delivering good quality mobile content means plenty of images and video content and tasks that can be completed in a matter of minutes. This style of training doesn’t mean delivering less training; it just means breaking the training down into clearly defined segments, which will help people to get a grasp of every detail of their development plans.
Businesses that want to improve morale and lower their turnover of management professionals should know that the statistics suggest that increased training is a big factor in retaining staff members. The way that people go online and use their free time is changing and in 2016, there is an opportunity to develop leaders by taking advantage of the new ways that people can learn and develop.
